According to Lonely Planet, Épernay is a self-proclaimed capitale du Champagne and home to many of the world’s most celebrated Champagne houses, including the famous (and much commercialised) Moët & Chandon and Dom (Pierre) Perignon.
We went to Épernay to treat ourselves for our honeymoon of 2011. We signed up for a day trip using Viator as we only had a few days to spare to explore this region.
Coming from a country with lots of beautiful, lush wineries (Hunter Valley, Barossa Valley, Southern Highlands, Margaret River just to name a few), I really had high hopes for the Champagne capital of France. It certainly did not disappoint. Granted, it was quite touristy and there are other wine regions to explore, but let’s face it, aren’t you just a little bit curious to see Dom’s cellar? We were.
Épernay is 25km south of Reims, which is also worth a visit even for a couple of hours.
