5 Very Handy Travel Accessories

I’m always on the lookout for useful accessories to add to my travel bag whenever I’m planning for my next trip. Of course, technology is a given – phones, cameras, notebooks, universal power plugs, etc.

The ever-growing popularity of photo sharing social media apps such as Instagram is perhaps responsible for the birth of the selfie stick. Great idea.

Although, aside from the techy gadgets, there have been a number of items that recently found its way into my travel bag. Needless to say, eBay has become my best friend.

Silk sleeping bag liners will be your lifesaver when you find yourself stuck in a dodgy hostel. There was this one time when the 4×4 tour group I was on got stranded in the middle of Bolivia at Laguna Colorada. Basically, the group that took us there (Esmeralda Tours) was apparently not registered to go beyond the Laguna Colorada border and as such, we missed out on seeing the Reserva Eduardo Abaroa, Geisers, Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde which is located at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano. It’s just a case of bad luck really. Anyway, the accommodation at the Laguna Colorada border consisted of really really really soiled mattresses that emitted a disturbing smell. The sleeping bag liners came in handy at that point and because it is made from silk, it provided additional warmth. I opted for inexpensive silk liners from Vietnam which you can find on eBay.

Small LED flashlight – trust me, you will use this at least once in any trip you take. I have a Mini Maglite® that I carry around even in my day-to-day handbag. You can attach it to a zipper handle or put it in an easy to reach pocket.

Waterproof travel storage bags can be used to separate your shoes, dirty laundry or protect your techy gadgets. If you can’t find one, water resistant (yes, there’s a difference) bags are a good substitute. In which case, I would probably add a couple of snap-lock/zip-lock sandwich bags for my gadgets to add that waterproof aspect. These bags can also house/organise your travel documents, power plugs and chords.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation when your phone completely flatlined? Sure, smartphones are getting more advanced and sleek. But like life, there needs to be a balance. Basically, sleeker smartphones = less battery life. A few months ago, I purchased the emergency keyring Powerbank from This portable external power accessory/battery charger will give you just enough juice so that you can post that well-posed selfie on your Instagram.

Pashmina/Sarong/large scarf can be used by both men and women. It can be used as a blanket on those long plane/bus/train/ferry rides, or perhaps to cover shoulders (especially the ladies) when entering religious sites. Out of the three, sarongs are probably the most versatile as it can be converted into almost anything – 101 uses in fact, according to fellow WordPress blogger
